The V8 Supercar series could make a second appearance on the
Formula One support bill if a play to be included at future Singapore grands prix comes off.
The country has been on the V8 radar for some time as it looks to replace China amongst its overseas events, and the advent of Formula One appears to have accelerated the bid, with V8 Supercar chairman Tony Cochrane involved in discussions to race during the daylight hours ahead of what could become a regular 'after dark' GP.
"Wouldn't it be great if, when the
F1 cars raced at night, we raced during the day," he told Melbourne's
Age newspaper, "What an unbelievable double-header. It would be bigger than
Ben Hur."
Cochrane admitted that, however successful the talks, the V8s would
not be joining the fray at the inaugural Singapore F1 weekend because the date scheduled for the event falls directly between the new Phillip Island 500 endurance race and the Bathurst 1000, but that future calendars could be planned to accommodate the chance to stage another street race.
The series returns to its original F1 support slot next season, with Melbourne's Albert Park back on the schedule after a clash of dates forced it to miss the 2007 event, and a Singapore event would not only add to overseas rounds already staged in Bahrain and New Zealand, but also bolster the popular street race portion of the schedule, alongside the event in Surfers Paradise and future venues in Hamilton and Townsville. Cochrane is also pursuing a possible event based in the former Olympic Park in Sydney's Homebush Bay.
