The points system utilised by the V8 Supercar Championship Series has again been altered for the forthcoming 2008 season, which gets underway in little over a month.
The new system maintains the principles utilised by its predecessor – designed to reward winning and passing – whilst also awarding points to the top thirty runners – similar to the structure used during championships between 2003 and 2006.
After several unforced retirements during 2007, where competitors outside the top fifteen parked their entries to reduce tyre wear and avoid the risk of collisions, the system encourages all entries to finish as high as possible in every race of the championship.
A maximum of 100 points is on offer for sprint rounds, with 150 points offered for each leg of the Clipsal 500 Adelaide, and 300 points for drivers winning endurance races such as the Phillip Island 500 or Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama.
The system comes into effect immediately and will be used at the series opening Clipsal 500 Adelaide from February 21-24.
