Sydney driver Len Cave was lucky to escape injury after a horrifying high-speed accident during the WPS Bathurst 12 Hour race at Mount Panorama.

The 57-year-old was running down the order at the wheel of his Mazda 3 MPS when he ran slightly wide turning into The Chase during the tenth hour of the race – with dramatic consequences.

With the car travelling at approximately 250 kilometres an hour, the Mazda dug into the gravel and then rolled roughly ten times, a number of which were clean in the air.

The impact proved to be so severe that the engine, front suspension and gear box were torn clear from the Mazda, which came to rest on its wheels on the exit of The Chase.

Cave was able to remove himself from the car, and was assisted by medical personnel at the scene of the crash before being escorted to the medical centre for a thorough check-over. However he appeared to have escaped serious injury.

The race itself was won by Damien White, Rod Salmon and Graham Alexander driving the #87 SKWIRK.com Mitsubishi Lancer EVO IX.
