“When the conditions are so changeable, you have to be on the right tyres at the right time,” 'Richo' confirmed, ”There was a stage when it was dry down the back and raining in the pits and then it swapped over and was dry in the pits and raining out back. It was really difficult to make a call. You need to be at the pointy end when the cars bunch up on a street circuit, so now I'm just focused on trying to maximise the result in the racing. Everything else is elementary.”

An unlikely looking top ten was completed by James Courtney, Lee Holdsworth, Cameron McConville, Greg Murphy, Michael Caruso, Mark Skaife and Fabian Coulthard, but things simply would not go right for Team Vodafone, which will see its remaining car, piloted by Craig Lowndes, start race one from 21st on the grid after problems in the opening stage of qualifying.
