BF Goodrich rally programme manager, Aime Chatard has criticised the organisers of the Cyprus Rally, the twelfth round in the 2006
FIA WRC, which took place last weekend, for not bothering to tell them that they had re-surfaced the roads.
Speaking following the event, Chatard was seemingly less than impressed that they weren't informed of the work done on the stages, although it didn't stop them from winning the event and stretching their run to 12 from 12.
"Two tread patterns per driver were authorised for this year's Cyprus Rally," he explained. "In addition to the BFGoodrich g-force Gravel which all our partners chose, the
Citroen drivers nominated the g-Force H1 following their pre-event testing, while Ford's drivers selected the H2 - which contributed Marcus [Gronholm]'s win in Greece - because they had anticipated there would be a great deal of wear this weekend.
"The 2006 Cyprus Rally however turned out to be less rough and less hard-wearing on tyres than we had expected. Without informing us, the organisers decided to resurface a number of stages prior to the start and this left a top-coating of soft gravel which was as deep as 5 cm in places."
Chatard meanwhile added that he is not convinced that the reason Kronos #1 driver,
Sebastien Loeb was able to pull out a 20-odd second cushion on Saturday afternoon came down to the tyre choice - even though Seb felt his wider spec BF Goodrich tyres had handed him an advantage over Gronholm, who went for the narrower ones.
