Urmo Aava will be out to make the most of the absence of his
Suzuki team-mate, Per-Gunnar Andersson on the Rallye Deutschland to close the gap to the Swede in the battle for the 2007
FIA Junior Rally Championship title.
Aava currently trails P-G by 4 points in the JRC standings and with Andersson not competing in Germany after losing his license [see separate story], the Estonian has a great opportunity to move ahead.
Speaking prior to the start of the event, following a positive shakedown on Thursday, Urmo added though that the Trier-based event is by no means an easy one, especially as the weather often makes things extra complicated.
"This rally is naturally a very good opportunity for us to move up into the lead of the championship, so we have to drive very carefully to be sure of making the finish. The key to this event will be to stay out of trouble and avoid punctures, but this is much more easily said than done,” he explained.
“Germany is very different to most asphalt events, and it will be extremely easy to be caught out by the tricky conditions.
“I know that both myself - and the Suzuki Swift can be very strong on asphalt from the past, but you also need a bit of luck as well. The weather, as always, will be unpredictable here in Germany - we need to make sure that we stay on the road if it gets slippery."
For the record, Aava comes into the event on something of a high having finished seventh overall on the recent Rally Finland, where he was competing in a Mitsubishi Lancer WRC05 – only his third outing with the car and only his second with it in the WRC.
