The WRC paid tribute to Colin McRae on Thursday ahead of the RallyRACC Catalunya-Costa Daurada, the twelfth round in the 2007
FIA World Rally Championship.
Drivers, officials and team personnel came together at around 19.30 hours local time for an emotional 15-minute ceremony, which was held to celebrate the life of the Scot, who was tragically killed in a helicopter crash on September 15.
Colin died in the accident along with his five-year-old son, Johnny, as well as the youngster's friend Ben Porcelli and family friend Graeme Duncan.
"Fate decided to take Colin away a few days before our rally. We are proud to remember him as a person and as a champion, as he amply deserves," said Aman Barfull, clerk of the course for the event.
"Colin won the Rally Catalunya twice and will always remain in our minds. He is part of the history of our rally."
Double world rally champion, Carlos Sainz, who has now retired from competing in the WRC, meanwhile spoke on behalf of all the drivers': "Colin was, above all, a good friend," he continued. "For those who are part of the world of rallies, he was a great champion. He has now become a legend."
The tribute, which took place at the Port Aventura Hotel, after torrential rain forced the organisers to cancel the ceremonial start, concluded when Martin Hewins, a close friend of Colin, played part of a special piece he has composed to honour the 1995 World Rally champion, 'A Pipers' Tribute to
Colin McRae'.
