The organisers of the Wales Rally GB have promised that this year's event will be better than ever.

The Swansea-based round apparently enjoyed one of its most successful years to date in 2007 and overall ticket sales were up over 14 per cent compared to 2006.

Competitor entrant figures were also at a high, with 114 cars taking the starting ramp in Cardiff - the largest entry on the event since 2000, as well as being the biggest start number for any rally in the sixteen-round world championship in '07.

2007 also saw the service park moved from Felindre to Swansea's prestigious Waterfront Development and in addition the WRGB also visited, as has become the norm in recent years, the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff for a super special stage on the Saturday, where 26,500 rally fans flocked to see the action.

Elsewhere, over 8,000 people attended the ceremonial start in Cardiff on the Thursday evening, again one of the highest figures seen for that element of the last round of the championship.

"We are extremely proud of the success of 2007's Wales Rally GB, the event's 75th anniversary," said Andrew Coe, chief executive of IMS, the organisation behind Wales Rally GB.

"With the support and backing of Wales, we are striving, constantly, to improve the concept and bring fresh thinking to the event. 2007 was a fabulous year for us but we will not stand still.

"As we prepare for WRGB 2008, the team is looking at some extremely exciting initiatives that will continue to move the concept of world championship rallying in Britain forward."
