The organisers of the Wales Rally GB have thanked the FIA, the sports governing body, for agreeing to put the date of the event back by one week.

The 15th and final round in the 2008 FIA World Rally Championship was due to have run from November 27-30, however it will now take place from December 4-7, a week later than originally scheduled.

This will avoid a clash with another 'major International sporting event' in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on Saturday November 29, which has yet to be officially announced - although gpweek.com reports it is a Rugby fixture.

"For the past two months we have been working closely with the major events teams in both Cardiff City Council and the Millennium Stadium to avoid a clash of these two major International events in the Welsh capital," explained Andrew Coe, chief executive of International Motor Sports, organisers of Wales Rally GB.

"They both require a huge amount of resources, such as accommodation, traffic management and facilities to welcome visitors from around the world.

"We are very grateful to the FIA for agreeing to our request for a date change which now allows us to plan the running of the 76th edition of this world-renowned rally in detail."

Details of the rally start and finish locations in Cardiff together with the overall route and timetable for the event meanwhile will be announced as normal at the end of May or in early June.
