WRC » Sordo: I gained a lot from this weekend.

Monday, 28th April 2008

Spaniard not displeased with second.

Citroen's number two driver Daniel Sordo had to make do with the runners-up spot on the inaugural Jordan Rally on Sunday, but despite that he was still happy with his performance over the weekend.

Indeed he led throughout the opening leg on Friday and he set a number of good stage times during the three-days, including winning four, the same amount as Mikko Hirvonen, who of course took the victory.

It was the first time the Spaniard has ever occupied first position on a gravel event at the end of a leg, and that was another reason for him to be cheerful.

His performance was also impressive as he had to play the 'road sweeper' on days two and three.

"I was fully aware this morning that the cards weren't stacked in our favour [as we were running first on the road], but I tried to put that to the back of my mind and push as hard as possible," he reflected.

"That paid because we were only 7.7 seconds off the lead after the first loop, and there was still everything to play for second time round. I did all I could to recover the lead [on the repeat loop] but it wasn't enough. Even so, I am pleased with our performance this weekend.

"We led on two occasions and I was delighted with my feeling at the wheel of the Citroën C4 WRC from start to finish. The rally was quite stressful but it was also beneficial for me. I'm sure the experience will come in useful on the forthcoming events."

Sordo's co-driver Marc Marti meanwhile was also happy with the event and reckons Dani learned an awful lot, something that should pay dividends this season, as he looks for his maiden win in the WRC.

"We knew that it would be difficult today," he added. "We tried to push. Citroen asked us to drive as fast as possible.

"This event has been good for us. Dani did a great job. He is still learning and I am happy for him. He is improving all the time. He needs to be patient and know how to be first on the road. He is learning a lot of things."
