Francesco Fanari was the only other JWRC runner to make it to the end and he was classified in ninth in his
Citroen C2-R2, way, way back after going out on day one with gearbox problems and then retiring again on day two with an overheating engine. He finished under the SupeRally.
Of the retirees, in addition to Sandell, a number of other drivers' also failed to finish, including Alessandro Bettega (engine), Hans Weijs Jr (alternator), Kevin Abbring (engine), Michal Kosciuszko (engine) and Jaan Molder, the latter crashing out in the final loop while running second.
"This morning was good for me, the first two stages in particular went well," he said. "I had some problems with the notes in the third stage. We had three or four moments when the car was sliding a lot. I decided that Sebastien [Ogier] was too far ahead to try and catch him. Crashing out on SS20 was really disappointing.
"It was looking like I was going to take more points from Jordan, but now there's nothing. Very tough."
For the record Vilius Rozukas had been due to do this event but he did not start due to a problem with his sponsors and, as a result, he has been excluded from the 2008 JWRC by the stewards of the rally, in accordance with the
FIA's regulations.
The Junior World Rally Championship now continues next month with the Rally d'Italia Sardegna.
