Subaru's Chris Atkinson becomes the first 'works' retirement in Turkey.

Subaru number two driver Chris Atkinson has retired from day one of the Rally of Turkey.

Atkinson, who had been running ninth, went out following SS6 - the 24.15 kilometre-run through Myra 2 after damaging his front suspension.

A spokesperson for the team has since confirmed to Crash.net that he will re-start on day 2 under the SupeRally format in order to put more mileage on the new Impreza WRC2008, which only made its debut in the World Rally Championship on the previous event in Greece two weeks ago.

Chris is the first 'works' retirement of the event and the second World Rally Car driver to go out, joining Citroen privateer Urmo Aava on the sidelines. Aava went out in SS3 when he lost a wheel.
