Britain's
Matthew Wilson has said that he feels he is exactly where he needs to be at the mid-day point in his five-year programme at the pinnacle of the sport.
Wilson Jr, who is of course the son of Ford boss Malcolm Wilson, made the step up to the World Rally Championship full-time back in 2006 and he is now in his third season with the
Stobart Ford squad. Since graduating to the top level he has scored 24 points in total, his best result coming at the end of last season when he was fourth overall on the Rally Japan.
This year he has managed four points finishes and he went into the summer break very positively following back-to-back top eight results in Greece and Turkey, when he brought his M-Sport-run Focus RS WRC07 home in seventh and sixth respectively.
"It is exactly where we wanted it to be," Matt told
Crash.net Radio in an exclusive interview at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed, when asked about his five year plan. "We are still on track and when I have finished that five year plan I will still only be 23-years-old. Time is on my side.
"I am enjoying it and I just need to keep on improving. We have been making progress and the last few rounds before the summer break were really positive. Greece and Turkey both went well. If we can keep making that sort of progress I will be happy.
"There are some good rounds in the second half of the year and I am looking forward to them."
Asked about the first part of the year, the Englishman picked out Turkey and Sweden as his main highlights: "I think Sweden was probably a great rally for us and also Turkey. To finish the first day there within a minute of the guys at the front of the field was a good achievement after 170 kilometres of driving," he continued.
"Sweden in contrast was a real high
and a real low. We had real good pace and we were battling for fifth position. But then we retired towards the end [with a mechanical issue in the penultimate stage]. But overall I think there have been more highs than lows so far this year.
