Haga at the double in Monza.

Sunday, 13th May 2007

Noriyuki Haga took the second race win at Monza to give his team the double at their home round. The Yamaha Italia rider was on awesome form and was not going to be beaten at the sixth round of the Corona Extra World Superbike Championship.

James Toseland on the Hannspree Ten Kate Honda put up a huge fight for second place with Troy Bayliss who almost got him on the final corner in a similar manner to the move he pulled on him at Assen.

Haga said, “I am very happy for the result here as it is our home track. I never win here and now I win twice. So thank you team and fans.”

Changing tyre choice helped Toseland to his podium finish but he did say they didn't quite have the set up, “I was trying to keep with Nori but he was flying and he has been all weekend. I ran the B compound tyre in the first race and it made the last five laps very difficult. I went with the C compound in the second one but we didn't quite have the set up for it.”

Bayliss admitted that it had been hard work. “Hats off to everyone on the podium, they all rode well. I didn't get a good start but the second half of my race was better and I set my fastest time three laps from the end. I'm happy with a podium finish as the bike is a year old and all the adjustments were simply to set up. Max passed James but then had a tank slapper; I had a good run on Max and got him. I tried for James but I lost the front through the final turn and he got me.”

When the lights went out Lorenzo Lanzi was left sitting on the line with a stalled bike. The rest of the field streamed through the first chicane with Regis Laconi cutting it slightly and getting out in front. Toseland was on his way and he soon took the lead with Laconi second and Corser in third.

Roberto Rolfo, Toseland's team-mate was running fourth but he pushed his way by both Laconi and Corser to secure second place. Haga was now coming through the field and used the slipstreaming along the main straight to good effect, catapulting himself from fourth to second.
