The race was now split into two distinctive groups, with Toseland and Haga gapping the second bunch of Rolfo, Corser, Biaggi and Laconi. Toseland fended off Haga for a full seven laps until Haga squeezed passed. On the same lap Biaggi made his way up to third place, Corser tried to pass both Biaggi and Rolfo round the outside at the first chicane but it didn't stick
The chasing group now had Bayliss on the back of it as he pushed Corser back and out of contention. Lap sixteen and it was time for Rolfo to get the Bayliss treatment and Biaggi was now in his sights and one lap later Bayliss got him. Biaggi came back at him and tried for Toseland too but he had a big tank slapper on the exit of Lesmo one and Bayliss got away. The gutsy Australian lunged for Toseland on the final turn only to lose the front and be out gunned by Toseland to the line. Biaggi's tank slapper relegated him fifth place behind Rolfo.
