Corser couldn't believe his bad luck when an engine bolt broke on lap four spewing oil from his machine forcing him to retire. The top three was now Haga, from Toseland with Biaggi in third. Further down the pack Fabrizio was making his presence felt catching the taking Lanzi for fourth place.
On lap ten Biaggi took second place from Toseland while his team-mate
Yukio Kagayama crashed out when he lost the front. Biaggi grabbed the lead from Haga on lap twelve and Toseland set about relieving him of second position. With four laps to run Toseland claimed second place but couldn't bridge the gap to Biaggi. And with three laps to go Fabrizio made a decisive move on Haga to secure the final step of the podium.
Roberto Rolfo, team-mate to Toseland in the Hannspree Ten Kate Honda team had a good run to fifth place. Reigning World Champion Troy Bayliss on the Xerox Ducati finished in sixth just ahead of his young team-mate.
The only PSG-1 Kawasaki to finish in the top ten was that of Fonsi Nieto in eighth place. Shinichi Nakatomi took a second top ten finish with a ninth place and Ruben Xaus on the Sterilgarda Ducati completed the top ten.
