Preview - Miller Motorsports Park.

Thursday, 29th May 2008

World Superbike returns to America this weekend for the first time since 2004.

The state-of-the-art Miller Motorsports Park facility opened in 2006 and has four different configurations, ranging from two different 2.2-mile circuits (East and West Courses) to the 3.08-mile Perimeter/Outer Course, which will be used for World Superbike, and the 4.5-mile Full Course for the AMA Superbike event (so don’t try to compare lap times…).

The long main straight allows the fastest cars and motorcycles to approach 200 mph before braking for Turn 1. The Outer Course eliminates the entire infield section and is one of the fastest track layouts in North America. While the track is basically flat, the design incorporates several elevation changes in order to add character and challenge.

Miller Motorsports Park has had to do a vast amount of work in preparation for the arrival of the WSBK teams, including replacing sponsor signage, revamping the electrical system in the garages to accommodate European-standard 220-volt outputs, improving wireless Internet connectivity, preparing temporary office spaces for the championship series staff, erecting tents for food service, vendors and other users, adding additional paid and volunteer staffing and preparing for the biggest onslaught of visitors in the track's short history.

This work is in addition to the upgrades that have already been made to the track, including an extended pit road, larger gravel traps, enlarged paved runoff area and expanded curbing, all of which was done over the winter at a cost of nearly a million dollars.

"It has been a massive undertaking", said Miller Motorsports Park CEO/general manager Alan Wilson. "This event is an order of magnitude well above anything that we have ever attempted, and we have been preparing for it since last fall. It is very prestigious for Miller Motorsports Park to host such a significant racing series, and our staff has gone all-out to ensure that we will be excellent hosts to the teams, riders, fans and sponsors, and that we present the best possible image to the fans around the world who will be watching on television".
