Yuki-power: Slipstreaming Monza and gravel traps.

Tuesday, 10th May 2005

Alstare Suzuki's Yukio Kagayama finished the first race a strong second to his team-mate at the Monza round of the Corona Extra World Superbike championship.

The second race did not go quite to plan and ended on lap ten, in the gravel. In his exclusive Crash.net column Yuki-san tells us what happened...

I knew Troy-san would be strong in the races so I had to go with him at the front. He managed to get to the first corner before me but I was not worried as Monza has many high-speed straights that are good for slipsteaming, as Tory-san told me before we got here.

Again and again I showed Troy my front wheel, so he knew I was there! The worst thing to do is barge past and knock him off, so I had to just take my time. Regis Laconi was also giving me a headache from behind, always on my rear tyre. That Ducati is loud, constantly pounding my ears! But I kept him behind and concentrated on Troy-san.

It was weird at the end, I tried to get past Troy, but couldn't, then there was this Ducati behind me, I thought it was Regis but after I see it is young James-san! We were almost side-by-side on finish line, but I keep my place with Suzuki-speed!

The second race was not so good, there were lots of bashing on first laps and I miss my braking point on lap 10 so I go into gravel. I think 'not again!' as I give it maximum gas but the wheels just dug in and Yuki-san was trapped. The bike fell over as I could not hold it up. I tried to restart but engine sound like a coffee bean grinder so I figure best to leave it there!

I really wanted to finish the weekend on top step but it was not to be.

Next race is at Silverstone in UK and I can't wait!

I speak to my old Rizla Suzuki boss Paul Denning a lot as he is my best friend. He help me a lot and I have much respect for him. I can't wait to come to England again for all my fans and old team with new British-Alstare livery I have planned for everyone.

I hope to make up for not finishing race two with two good podiums, and I have raced at Silverstone so I do not have to learn circuit direction so can push from the first session!

Look out England – Yuki-san is coming home!
