Corser's corner: Anyone can be fast at Monza.

Tuesday, 10th May 2005

The seemingly unbeatable Troy corser was relegated to the third spot on the podium during the second race of the Corona Extra World Superbike championship at Monza last weekend.

In his exclusive Crash.net column he explains what happened and how he still managed to extend his championship lead...

Yukio got away well, even though I beat him into the first corner of the first race, and he hounded me on every lap. I just kept my head and concentrated on not over stressing my tyres because that could’ve ended any race win hopes I had.

He tried to come past quite a few times, sometimes successfully, sometimes not so. On the last lap he came under me and we touched, nothing major, but it caused him to slow and get caught by Toseland on the Ducati.

Then it was easy, I just banged off the last lap and came across the line with a bit of a lead.

The second race was not as good. From pretty early on I knew I had a small problem, the front tyre was vibrating on heavy braking so I couldn’t push as hard as I had in the first race. Still I managed to hold the leaders for a while, but when Chris Vermeulen came past I knew there wasn’t anything I could do about him. I had a good battle with Karl Muggeridge and was determined not to let him take the last place on the podium ahead of me so on the last lap I braked as hard as I dared and managed to pip him to the line.

When I saw my team-mate Yukio Kagayama go off I knew I had extended my lead at the top of the championship so that took a bit of the pressure off my shoulders during the race.

Now unfortunately I have to jet off to the UK before Silverstone for a funeral of a very close friend of mine and my family.

I always like going to the UK despite the weather!

Hopefully at Silverstone in two weeks I can further extend my championship lead, but I know no-one, especially my team-mate, is going to give up an inch on the track!

Hope to see you there!
