We stayed in Melbourne for a couple of weeks after the Qatar test. The first week was a bit of a blur – the effort of the test combined with the jet lag finally took its toll and I was pretty exhausted. Although it did give me time to meet the two new additions to the family and I am happy to report that I have become an uncle for the first time and then a second time all within twenty-four hours!
Being in Melbourne also meant that I could finally see my 1982 Mike Hailwood replica for the first time. I bought it at the start of the year sight unseen and I couldn’t help but start tinkering. All in all it’s a great bike and I can’t wait to take it for a spin. It hasn’t been started for a few years but it started second kick which was quite impressive. Talking about starting second kick, I also dusted off and rode my Beta trials bike for the first time which was better for my morale than a three week vacation in Tahiti - although I think Sandra would have preferred the vacation.
Unfortunately the test in Qatar meant that I couldn’t take part in the annual Peninsula toy run which is held to raise food, toys and money for those that need it over Christmas. But Sandi loaded up her scooter hung some tinsel over off the handle bars and went along with her dad to meet up with the other 200-plus bikers for the ride along the peninsula to deliver the donations. As strange as it sounds, it is something that I usually enjoy doing so I am sure I will be back next year.
