When Troy Bayliss crossed the line in the second of the weekend's World Superbike Championship races at Brno, he became the winner of the 500th race in the series' history, twenty years after his Ducati team boss Davide Tardozzi became the first victor.
For a company the size of Yamaha to have never won the WSBK is pretty amazing. Or pretty sad. Anyway, Congrats to Bayliss! A true superbike God.

If Bayliss is number three then who was #1 and #2? Fogarty is probably in the top three but who else, Corser? Below is a list of all the WSB champs. Based on this list Fogarty is still king of WSB even if Troy Bayliss wins championship #3 but that would put him as #2 all time. Imagine if Bayliss could have raced Fogarty on equal machinary, I'd bet on Troy.

1 people agree.1 people disagree.
It's not just the amount of championships - it's the ratio of wins to starts. I'm sure Bayliss is about 1 in 3. If anyone's got the stat books to hand it'd be appreciated if they could name Foggy's wins/starts...
They're still about even, with (dare i say it) Bayliss a nose ahead. Honorable mentions to Corser, Haga and Chili too!
You are correct Marc. Troy has the largest number of podiums at 121, with Carl Fogarty second on 109. It means Bayliss won't be able to catch either of them before he retires.
Richard, Carl had 220 starts and 59 wins, with Bayliss next on 142 starts with 48 wins. That comes to a win in every 3.7 starts for Fogarty and a win in every 3 starts for Bayliss. If you look at it like that, Bayliss is therefore more successful rider.
The list looks like a who's who of former AMA guys. Merkel, Polen, Russell, Corser, Kocinski, Edwards, and Bayliss. Sadly, we never got to see Bayliss long because he was called up to replace Foggy who even sadder was done because of injury. I think Bayliss could have been the first to win AMA, BSB, and WSBK. And Hodgson is a AMA guy now. The only chance he has of doing the triple is if Mladin retires and Spies goes off to MotoGP or he gets a Yosh Suzuki.

Doug Polen was my favorite of them all. In '91 he won 17 of 26 races, 7 in a row and took 14 fast laps. If I'm not mistaken that was his rookie year. He repeated as champion in '92, collecting 9 more wins. In '93 he returned to AMA and won that championship. Back to WSBK in '94 & '95 for the Castrol Honda team on the RC45. I can't remember how he did there but all in all, a superb rider and a genuinely nice guy.. He also won the Suzuka 8 hour.
