Superpole ditched in qualifying shake-up.

Sort Comments:

Superpole replaced in qualifying shake-up.

The World Superbike Championship's qualifying format is to undergo a significant change in 2009 as it adopts a knockout system similar to Formula 1.

So long as tv race directors actually keep the cameras on a rider on a hot lap instead of showing us pictures of people in the pit lane or a racer on a out/in lap then it should be good. That's the one thing that spoils qualifying in F1 - you'll have the commentators saying someone's on a hot lap and the tv cameras are on something else of no interest instead of on the action.

Personally I hate the idea of changing Superpole.
It has always been the highlight of any of my Phillip Island events to see SP.
To me this has taken away a large amount of the skill of these fine riders.
Anybody can put a fast lap in when they are not under pressure to do so.
To be able to do it on a single lap is a risk that rewards the brave-.

Darren,

The F1 knock out system is really exciting and the pressure will still on the riders to put in quick qualifying laps. Super Pole, was in theory a good idea, but in practice proved to be dull.

Jacko..each to there own I guess...
But please tell me what the difference will be?
I mean... Before SuperPole they are all out on track turning laps.
That is normally the time when you are at the track that you line up for Hotdogs & Chips...

For me the most exciting time of Warm up is at the end when the riders go around track popping wheelies. There will be less interest in seeing a knock out WARM UP SEASON for me then being able to watch a single rider on track hanging it out to get that one perfect lap in. I have to admit SuperPoll is great on TV & maybe a bit less of an event at the track. But I for one have enjoyed it both live at track & the other 13 Times on TV..

Any idea how tyres will work with the new system?

Now they only get qualifying tyres for superpole, will they all get to use multiple qualifying tyres at the final session? multiple runs on qualifying tyres means times will drop even more

am I missing something? 20 riders all trying to get a time in 12 minutes! sounds like a bit of a lottery

The only benefit i can see, is it effectively gives the top riders another full session on track ( although it isnt specified whether they will now get 2 prac. on Friday and now 3 on saturday.

If so, in the last Qual session you could bang in your fastest lap possible in the first 12 mins, and use the rest of the hour for race setup.

Bummer. Even the GP guys sometimes say "Maybe we should adopt a superpole or something similar". I think Superpole was a good way to do it.

Superpole is boring, i much prefer the Moto Gp system. everyone gets an hour to post some fast laps and do a bit of set up time if needed. If we go to a F1 style system all the top guys get more set up time, when really its the guys at the bottom that need more track time. The Moto Gp qualifying hour makes for some top TV. SBK should follow suit.
