World Superbikes » Martin: DFX claim I never had a contract!

Thursday, 31st May 2007

Having finally severed all ties with DFX Honda, following a drawn-out breakdown blamed on financial problems, Steve Martin has spoken of his frustration at how he was treated by the Italian team.

"There's also World Endurance and stuff like that, but that's not where my heart is. My heart is in this paddock and maybe even British Superbikes. But once again the right thing has to come up. If I go to BSB, for example, it would have to be with a team that has the right tyres. After riding for the Foggy Petronas team you get used to a certain level of professionalism. Maybe younger guys are a bit more desperate and can step back down and take whatever they can, but for me once you've had a certain level of professionalism it's hard to go back and I'm not willing to go back."

But while Martin's racing career may be in a state turmoil, the opposite is true of his personal life - which he says is now better than ever.

"The baby's awesome! On that side of things life is fantastic in every way," smiled the 38-year-old Australian. "In terms of training, I'm fitter than I've ever been. So I'm ready to go. I just need the right opportunity to do it.

"I'm not here [at Silverstone] because I expect to get Haga's ride or something like that! I'm here because it's England, we've got family here, and are doing a bit of a tour around to say hello to people. We drove from Italy just for the hell of it. It's more of a social call this weekend..."

Part of that social call included TV commentary work on race day, when Martin joined Jonathan Green and BSB rider Scott Smart to commentate for the Superbike, Supersport and Superstock world coverage.

Martin will also be present at the next WSBK round at Misano on June 15-17, in one capacity or another, and will surely be calling former employer Carl Fogarty at some stage to discuss the Englishman's factory MV Agusta project for 2008...
