He lapped in 2min 0.573secs to keep the hard riding Troy Bayliss at bay. Bayliss has been struggling with lack of power this weekend but it didn't seem to hold him back during second qualifying.
Troy Corser on the second Yamaha Italia was in third place having sorted out his tyre concerns from Friday. The slightly cooler conditions helped the lap time's drop and improved grip.
Hannspree Ten Kate Honda's James Toseland was running in fourth place while his team-mate Roberto Rolfo was in eighth. Rolfo suffered a fast fall at the very end of the session crashing at the high speed turn one; he was able to walk away from the incident.
The Alstare Corona Extra Suzuki rider's Yukio Kagayama and Max Biaggi were in sixth and seventh respectively. The pair have been working hard on set-up for the long, hot race ahead.
Michael Fabrizio on the DFX Treme Honda was in seventh ahead of the luckless Rolfo. The PSG-1 Kawasaki's of Regis Laconi and Fonsi Nieto were in ninth and tenth respectively. Nieto suffered a technical problem during the session while his other team-mate Vittorio Iannuzzo crashed.
