He was the only rider to drop into the 2min 4sec bracket with a time of 2mins 4.871secs a good half second clear of his nearest adversary Yamaha's Broc Parkes.
Parkes is joined on the front row of the grid by fellow Australian Josh Brookes who has just moved back to the sport class with the Stiggy Motorsport squad. Brookes had been circulating in nineteenth place until towards the end of the session when he jumped up to take P1. That was soon reclaimed by Sofuoglu but Brookes remains on the front row.
The last place on the coveted front row went to his team-mate Robbin Harms who has been spectacularly fast all weekend.
Lining up directly behind his team-mate in fifth place is defending World Supersport Champion Sebastien Charpentier. Next to him is Yamaha rider Massimo Roccoli who slipped ahead of British rider Craig Jones.
Jones qualified in seventh place but looked like he had been held up through a corner by Simone Sanna. He was pointing and gesticulating at Sanna who then kicked out at him in anger.
Vesa Kallio on the on the Pioneer Hoegee Suzuki was eight completing row two. David Checa on the GMT 94 Yamaha took up ninth place and Katsuaki Fujiwara completed the top ten on the Althea Honda.
