World Superbikes » Laconi stays, Nieto goes?

Thursday, 6th September 2007

Regis Laconi has penned a new deal to stay at PSG-1 Kawasaki for the 2008 World Superbike season, but current team-mate Fonsi Nieto is deep in talks with Suzuki.

The official World Superbike website reports that 2004 title runner-up Laconi will stay on a ZX-10R for a third season, with negotiations over Nieto's future still underway.

However, Spanish sportspaper AS reports that Nieto has also been negotiating with Alstare Suzuki for the past two months. The former 250GP winner reportedly believes that Suzuki's factory team can offer him a better chance of adding to his solitary WSBK podium, obtained late in 2006.

Alstare team principal Francis Batta is said to be keen on the Spaniard, although his main priority is the retention of Max Biaggi.

Factory favourite Yukio Kagayama is expected to stay on a GSX-R1000 next year, while a third 'satellite' Alstare machine is currently being ridden by German Max Neukirchner.

Nieto's chances of an Alstare ride are said to 50%.
