Toseland takes a points hit.

Toseland, Germany WSBK Race 1 2007

World Superbikes » Toseland takes a points hit.

Monday, 10th September 2007

After the high of a double victory at Brand Hatch, James Toseland's 2007 World Superbike championship lead took a blow at Lausitz on Sunday when nearest rival Noriyuki Haga pushed a tough weekend for the Englishman.

A rear tyre problem in race one left the Hannspree Ten Kate Honda rider just ninth at the chequered flag, in which Haga romped victory, before salvaging fourth in race two - while Haga took second behind Troy Bayliss.

Toseland thus lost 25 points from his 66 point advantage heading into the German round, with 100 points still to be decided.

"It's been one of the most difficult weekends of the year, especially coming off the back of Brands Hatch," admitted JT. "The fact that it has rained for most of the weekend hasn't helped us at all. The bike is quite sensitive here and we needed dry track time to get a good set-up. In race one I had a problem with the rear tyre - I had no grip from it at all - but I used exactly the same tyre for race two and it didn't present a problem. Anyway, I have lost some of my lead, but I still have the lead so I just have to fight at Vallelunga to regain my advantage."

"The word 'disaster' is too strong, but for sure things didn't go so well for us," team manager Ronald ten Kate told Crash.net Radio. "James had no grip whatsoever in race one and the consequences of that were carried over to the second race. We normally improve the bike using feedback from James between the races but all he could feel in race one was the tyre problem.

"Looking back, if you take James' time from race two and bring it to race one, he would have got second or third. Race two was a lot quicker as most of the others improved their machines between the races, but we couldn't do that, so we came away with fourth place. A 41 point lead is ok, but when you arrive with a 66 point lead you never expect to leave with 25 points less. So it's one of those days."
