Italian gives fans the perfect homecoming gift with victory and a second place to launch himself back into the reckoning for title glory.

“When I got close with about ten laps to go I tried to overtake him and almost hit him. That caused me to run wide and I lost almost a second. That was the key moment of the race because it gave him a bit of a gap; after that I couldn't get close again even though I was trying so hard. My front end was pushing a lot and I gave it my best, but second position was all I could do.”

Still, with Toseland crashing out it was good enough to propel Biaggi into the same spot in the riders' standings with just Magny-Cours this coming weekend now left to go. Not that Max is giving much thought to the crown, however.

“I'm just looking to win races,” he stressed. “In year one maybe the championship is too much, with new tracks, a new bike, new tyres, new rivals – everything is new. We have two more races and 50 points available though, so you never know, and after a year without racing it's great to be back.”
