World Superbikes » Lavilla: I learned this in BSB.

Tuesday, 29th April 2008

A good points haul for former BSB champion Lavilla but bad starts continue to hamper the Spainard's progress.

Lavilla suffered two bad getaways in both Assen races, much like his Honda mounted countryman Carlos Checa. Lavilla then proved to be among the quicker and most consistent riders on track as he raced through the field.

Despite this setback the 2005 BSB champion scored two top ten results; a ninth in race one and a seventh in race two; moving him into ninth in the series.

The Vent-Axia VK backed Honda of Lavilla was also consistently the quickest bike through the circuit speed traps all weekend, as it has been at other tracks in 2008.

This is a tremendous fillip for the Paul Bird Motorsport team who have their tuning work done by FW Developments, a well respected bike tuner in the bike scene for many years.

This advantage could well come into its own at Monza, the historic, high-speed Italian venue for the next round of the championship.

The 34-year-old started both races from a low 15th grid position as the team were still working on setup on Saturday, this being their first time at the Dutch 'Cathedral of speed'.

Lavilla was unable to make much progress with his starts and on both occasions was fighting through the pack from 15th position or worse.

"Qualifying was not that good," admitted Lavilla. "I started both races with the same set-up and the bike was fast. I was able to be consistent especially in the second race when the temperature was higher for the rear tyre.

"I was able to keep a fast pace even when the bike was sliding a lot which is something I learned while riding in the UK. The team just need to work on improving the power delivery and then I can go even better."

Team boss Paul Bird, a winner of two British Superbike championships and multiple race wins at all levels of racing, was impressed with the result, but also keen to see improvment in his riders qualifying and early race pace.

"The results were great," he said. "If we could just get Greg up there in qualifying and the early part of the races we could surely be challenging for a podium.
