Troy Corser has revealed he is on the verge of opening talks with Yamaha about possibly staying with them for the 2009 World Superbike Championship.
The Aussie rider has been the key component of the traditional ‘silly season' rumours as he continues to be linked with a move to the new
BMW team next season.
However, Corser has revealed to
Crash.net that he is yet to put pen to paper on any deal for next season and with top brass from Yamaha arriving at
Brands Hatch to discuss the possibility of extending his contract into the future, he admits he could stay put.
“I am in talks with Yamaha this weekend, because I think they are here to find out what we are going to be doing next year,” he said. “I have spoken with BMW of course and a few other manufacturers have shown an interest too, but I haven't signed anything with anybody yet. My contract with Yamaha does end this season though, so I am pretty much free after this year.”
Indeed, Corser admits there is some unfinished business with Yamaha having been unable to get onto the top of the podium as an R1 rider. Nonetheless, he is continuing to stay focused on the season in hand before he worries about his prospects in 2009.
“If I get the chance, then I may well stay. It is time to decide what we are going to do, but at the moment I am currently focused on this year. I'd like to get that win under my belt too because they might then want me a bit more!”
Still, as a possible free agent after this season, Corser is unfazed about the prospect of switching teams provided he has factory support behind him.
“There aren't any of the top teams in the paddock that I wouldn't want to go and race with because they have shown to have competitive equipment and good team structures,” he added. “It doesn't really matter what bike I am riding, so long as I have a factory behind me and the package to do what I can.”
