Istanbul 2006: Zanardi romps to popular win.

Alex Zanardi claimed his second career victory in the World Touring Car Championship with an example of text book driving at Istanbul as those behind him, not least most of the title contenders, embarked on a chaotic afternoon of racing.

However, if fans were glad to see Zanardi atop of the podium for the first race, just as many people will be eager to see race two pole sitter Tom Coronel do something similar, the popular Dutchman needing just five points to claim the Independent Trophy today, but no doubt having a wry eye on a surprise win in his giant killing GR Asia Leon.

The main championship though has closed up significantly and although Priaulx still has a decent nine point buffer, Thompson, Dirk Muller and Rydell are all now equal on 49 points, while another seven points cover the standings down to seventh place.

However, just in case the championship needed an extra factor to make it more unpredictable, a heavy thunderstorm has deluged the circuit in a cloak of water and with the start already being delayed, it remains to be seen whether there will even be a second race today…
