James Thompson: Staying grounded.

Friday, 1st June 2007

It’s fair to say that I celebrated my double victory in time-honoured tradition...I had a good time, a few days holiday and tried to relax and savour the moment. It’s not often you win two races on a weekend, certainly not at this level so everybody was exceptionally happy.

Doing media interviews is so much easier since Valencia!! People thought a win might not come this year, but I was always confident after seeing how committed the team is.

You can’t win without having the car to do the job though, so let’s not under-estimate the work that was done behind the scenes. It’s N.Technology versus the might of BMW, SEAT and Chevrolet this year and the guys are doing an exceptionally good job; we really are re-working the car.

It’s a fantastic achievement to have won a couple of races in the world championship. There are a lot of people out there who haven’t won one let alone two on one weekend. I’m thoroughly pleased, even though we now have 30kilos success ballast, which will make a significant different to the handling of the car, but I’m still up-beat. We’ve also got a few new developments on the car for this weekend; little evolutions on the suspension but not to be under-estimated.

If I can win a race I’d love to but you’ve just got to be realistic about your goals. I don’t know the track so I’ve got to learn it and then try and set the car up. It’s not like if I was going straight from Valencia to Brands Hatch where I would be expecting to challenge for another win.

SEAT hasn’t had any weight penalty imposed on them so I think they should be very strong and the circuit should suit the car. But let’s face it; 19 cars were covered by one second in Valencia so it could be one of 19 cars that wins this race. It’s very difficult to pick a likely winner; it’s too close to call.

Having walked into the paddock here today, it seems slightly narrower than it did on YouTube! It’s a bit more like a Manx Special Stage, so let’s hope I stay away from the scenery!
