Preview - Imola 2005.

Thursday, 26th May 2005

It was a controversial, some say overtly rash, decision by the FIA to tamper with its weight policies so early in the season, but whether you empathise with the rear-wheel BMWs or side with the front-wheel drive Alfa Romeos and SEATs, there is little doubt that by slashing 20kg off the latter competitors, the World Touring Car Championship was turned on its head last time out at Silverstone.

"Unfortunately, the events that week meant that the track would be changed afterwards, and it now has nothing to do with what it once was," he said. "It is a track where it is very difficult to overtake. If you don’t want a driver to pass you he just can’t. All you can do if you want to pass a slower driver is to force him into a mistake, or wait until he runs wide at a corner. The track is also very hard on the brakes, with some very dramatic braking points downhill.

"Knowing all that, it is extremely important to qualify well, which in our championship isn’t easy as there is very little between the different cars and drivers. Personally I hope to qualify in the top twelve, but as we have seen at previous races you sometimes just need a few hundredths of a second to move up or down a couple of places on the grid."

Silverstone saw the three Lacetti’s far more on the pace, with Huff and Menu scoring highs of 13th place in each race and as a result Chevrolet will once again be attempting to fulfil their top ten objective, especially if one or more of the drivers qualify well. If not, then a weekend that does not require an expensive rebuild will also no doubt be welcomed.
