“We should do well at Spa,” he said. “We were quick there in qualifying last year, but had one or two problems during the races. Both Jordi and Jason have a really good chance of getting onto the podium and maybe even winning, but I think Peter and I are carrying too much weight to get a good result. My aim is just to get some points in both races, but it is always fun racing in front of such a big crowd.”
Gené in particular is desperate to get onto the podium for the first time this year, having seen his team mates grab the limelight. The Spaniard, who is in his third season at the wheel of the Toledo, has not scored in the last two rounds but he managed a podium at Spa last year and with the least ballast of the leading runners, he is expecting himself to be fighting for a victory.
“I enjoy Spa a lot,” he said. “The BMW’s were fast there last year but I will definitely be fighting to be on the podium. I have not been there for while and I miss it!”
Sharing Gene’s 5kg of ballast,
Jason Plato will also be looking to put a difficult week in the British Touring Car Championship behind him with a good performance at Spa.
It will be a particular interesting event for the SEAT team as Spa is expected to prove the final round for the Toledo saloon, ahead of being replaced by the stylish new Leon hatchback at the next round. Set to make its debut at the Oschersleben, the low slung new car is undergoing constant testing to make it as competitive as the current car. However, it has a lot to live up to against a car that has over the past three years developed from an also-ran to a front-running vehicle and has been the only real threat to the Alfa Romeo and
BMW dominance. It remains to be seen whether the new Leon can continue to erode the advantage of the series stalwarts.
