Preview - Istanbul 2005.

Wednesday, 14th September 2005

As far as stories go, the previous round of the World Touring Car Championship could have been the final scene in a film of determination, bravery and humbleness.

Nonetheless, it was Menu who comprehensively looked the team leader all weekend and proved competitive in both races amongst the likes of BMW and Alfa Romeo, even if the Lacetti is still not at the standard of its rivals. The team have admitted that they are likely to struggle more in Turkey thanks to characteristics that are not expected to suit the car. Nonetheless the team and drivers are determined to make the most of situation and gather more data for the future.

"I’m really looking forward to the race," Huff claims ahead of his Turkish debut. "It is yet another new track for me to learn but in this case nobody has an advantage over us when it comes to track knowledge. It will be a difficult track for us as it is a very long and very fast circuit. Knowing that, out main target will be to finish the races and gather as much data as possible and take that forward to next year. And if we’re lucky we might score a point or two."

After a season playing catch-up, Ford finally emerged in Germany with a competitive package that sprung a surprise to a number of their rivals. Indeed, although Oschersleben acts as the Team Hotfiel Sport testing base, the name of Michael Funke at the top of the timesheets in both practice sessions still raised a number of eyebrows, even if their form come qualifying was not so scintillating.

Nonetheless, the two blue and yellow Focus’ looked racier than they have done all season, with Thomas Klenke managing the teams best result of the year in the first race in tenth place, even if he was unlucky not to be in the points after a hold up late on in the race. Klenke was set for even better things in the second race when had fought his way up into seventh place and was on the tail of Dirk Müller until a puncture forced him down the field and unable to come away with the points the team arguably deserved.
