Andy Priaulx has returned to the top of the World Touring Car Championship after a dominant display in the second race at Magny-Cours, leading home Jorg Muller for BMWs second one-two finish of the day.
The Brit used his pole position to get cleanly away and from there on was never pressured, the reigning champion cruising home to his second win of the year, already one more than he managed in 2005 on the way to his World title.
Jorg Muller capped off a satisfying weekend with a battling drive from seventh on the grid to take another second place, the result going some way to repairing the damage done by his double retirement in the first round at Monza. Jordi Gene gave SEAT their second podium of the day and his first of the year to round out the top three.
In what was always promising to be an explosive start, the three BMWs once again proved to be far better off the line than the five SEATs that surrounded them, with their Spanish rivals diving into Estoril three abreast, Gabriele Tarquini on the inside with Rickard Rydell and Peter Terting on the outside. Inevitably contact was made with Tarquini tapping Rydell, who spun in front of the oncoming field, forcing several drivers to take avoiding action.
The big losers included Terting who had to drive through the gravel in avoidance but while he continued Dirk Muller spun on the inside putting an end to his race while Pierre-Yves Corthals clipped another car to launch onto two wheels and almost rolling over, eventually landing in the gravel and into retirement.
Further down the field,
BMW had flashes back to Monza when Luca Rangoni got squeezed out by Alex Zanardi and Marcel Costa either side of him coming out of Adelaide, the two works drivers being speared off into the barriers much like Dirk Muller and Andy Priaulx, albeit at lower speed.
