Magny-Cours 2006: Priaulx back on top.

Sunday, 30th April 2006

Andy Priaulx has returned to the top of the World Touring Car Championship after a dominant display in the second race at Magny-Cours, leading home Jorg Muller for BMWs second one-two finish of the day.

It was then Gene's turn to slip into the clutches of Muller, the Spaniard making a mistake going into 180, leaving the German an open invitation to capitalise, slipping up the inside.

By this point Priaulx had built up a suitable lead and held it right to the finish ahead of Muller and Gene, a result that now allows him to move ahead of Yvan Muller in the points' standings.

Thompson held on for a distant fourth place, with Tarquini in fifth, while Terting made a sterling comeback to grab sixth place, pulling an impressive out-braking manoeuvre on Yvan Muller in the process, the Frenchman settling for seventh on a difficult weekend at his home circuit.

Chevrolet continued their steady form with Nicola Larini passing team mate Rob Huff late on to take the final point, the Brit having to settle for another ninth place finish.

Things looked a little better for Alfa Romeo in the second race, particularly when Augusto Farfus Jr. managed to get himself up into eighth place after the first lap before falling back 12th place at the finish and leaving the team with no points on a very tough weekend for the Italian team.

Stefano D'Aste was a surprise winner in the Independents category, rocketing from 18th on the grid to avoid the action in front of him and rising as high as fifth place before eventually slipping down the order to finish in tenth place, one place ahead of Roberto Colciago in a privateer SEAT Leon.

The result now leaves Priaulx leading the title race, three points ahead of Yvan Muller, while Tarquini and Jorg Muller both share third place. Dirk Muller and Gene are fifth and sixth in the championship, while BMW have now moved ahead of SEAT in the constructors' race.
