Emmet O’Brien: It’ll come in time.

Thursday, 22nd June 2006

In his latest column for Crash.net, Irish driver Emmet O’Brien looks back at his second ‘home’ event on the World Touring Car Championship calendar in Germany…

I started at the back of the grid for the second race as a result of me not finishing the first race. I made up for a poor start in the first race by absolutely nailing the start in the second race! I passed four cars of the start but when I came in to the first corner which is a tight left hander I understeered straight on almost taking the nose of Ryan Sharp! He did very well to avoid me. I was probably carrying a little too much speed but also the car had no turn in grip at all, I was surprised that I went straight on!

We all got around the first corner without incident though. From then on I ran the toughest race of my career and I have never had to fight with a car as much in my life. I think I went off around three times and I had muscle burn in my shoulders from the continuous opposite lock that I was driving with all race. After the race some people commented on how spectacular it looked but I can tell you it was so difficult to finish the race. The problem was that we went completely the wrong way with set-up, partly because the weekend was wet and then dry with changing conditions all the time. But the fact of it is we now know that is not the way to go with set up and also can learn from our mistakes as a team. But at least I got it to the end and secured two more valuable points.

The weekend was very busy for me in Germany with negotiations about my future in the WTCC already beginning. I have to say the future looks bright and I have had many meetings in the last two weeks in order to try and secure substantial sponsorship to help me continue competitively for the rest of this season while also putting the wheels in motion for next season with a proper testing program and an early deal so that my management can plan for the year ahead.
