Alfa Romeo claimed their second 1-2 result of the day in the twelfth round of the World Touring Car Championship at Puebla, Mexico, although this time it was Augusto Farfus Jr. who stepped up from the support act to the main attraction with his second win of the year.
Having had to watch as Salvatore Tavano claimed his first WTCC win in the first race, Farfus was rewarded for a storming drive from seventh on the grid when team-mate and early leader Gianni Morbidelli put the team's championship aspirations first and allowed the better positioned Brazilian to claim victory.
On a day when many of the championship contenders produced lacklustre results, Farfus' 18 points has now rocketed him up the order to joint second in the standings, just three points behind new leader James Thompson.
With Rickard Rydell inheriting pole position courtesy of his eighth place finish in the first race, the Swede made no mistake at the lights, even anticipating where the traditionally fast starting
BMW of Dirk Muller would dive to, the German having to settle for second place ahead of Morbidelli and Thompson around the first corner.
However, it was not long before Alfa Romeo rose to front as they did in the first race, the agile 156 saloon of both Morbidelli and Farfus carving past their competitors in the early laps. Morbidelli first picked off Muller at the end of the first lap and saw his efforts of pressurising Rydell pay off when he squeezed down the inside at turn one, the Italian lucky not to hit the pit wall as he inched past.
Farfus, who by now had found his way past Muller too, pulled a similar, if more composed, move on Rydell to ensure Alfa Romeo would once again lead the field.
With Morbidelli and Farfus sprinting off into the distance, Rydell was forced to call upon his considerable experience in keeping the attentions of several cars the tail of his Leon, a comprehensive pack of cars that stretched back to those outside of the top ten.
