Michel Nykjaer has added the European Touring Car Cup to his Danish Touring Car Championship title after fighting his way from seventh on the grid to win the second race of the weekend at Adria.
The Dane started seventh on the reverse grid after finishing second in the first race, but was the most prolific in moving up the order to eventually grab the lead midway through the race and with it take the overall title on points.
Charlie Giepel started on pole position after Pontus Morth was dropped outside the top eight following a 30-second penalty for colliding with Jens Reno Moller, but the Austrian driver failed to get away well and as such lost out to Kristian Poulsen down to the first corner.
Alexander Lvov took second in the early stages, ahead of Moller, with Nykjaer already up to fourth after getting a good start around the tight and twisty Italian circuit.
Nykjaer was quickly on the move though, the GR Asia driver sliding his SEAT Leon up the inside of the Moller's Honda Accord to move up into second, before passing Lvov's Golden Motors Honda too to claim second on the sixth lap.
With just a small gap ahead to Danish counterpart Poulsen, Nykjaer rapidly made up the ground, crawling over the back of the
BMW and eventually finding a way through on lap 12.
Once in the lead, Nykjaer sprinted away to victory, the ten points he gained from that win adding to the eight he managed in the first race. With race one winner Tomas Engstrom only able to get up to fourth place, Nykjaer's 18 points in total was enough to defend GR Asia's crown following Ryan Sharp's win last year.
Second on the road and third in the standings went to Poulsen, the Dane enjoying a strong round overall for his Poulsen Motorsport team after Emmet O'Brien's third and fifth place finishes also earned him fourth in the overall standings.
