The FIA has announced a revision to the handicap weight system in place in the World Touring Car Championship ahead of the 2008 season.

Under the new rules approved by the World Motor Sport Council, the handicap system will now be referred to as success ballast and will be handed out according to two different criteria.

Firstly, drivers will pick up 1kg of extra weight for each championship point scored during the season, while more weight will be added for the top six drivers on each race weekend, from 30kg for the person with the best result from the two races down to 5kg for the sixth placed driver.

The result based weights will be scrapped and recalculated after each championship event, while no driver will be able to carry more than 70kg of success ballast on their car – an increase over the 2007 maximum of 60kg.

The other change to the system will see drivers who are new to the championship forced to carry 30kg of ballast on their first appearance – an increase of 20kg on the 2007 'penalty'.
