Tiago Monteiro will take on a new challenge this weekend when he makes his first World Touring Car Championship appearance at the Puebla circuit in Mexico.
The SEAT Sport man was still competing in
Formula 1 the last time the WTCC visited the venue back in 2006 and as such, will go into the weekend looking to learn the challenging circuit in the extra practice session that will take place on Friday at the challenging circuit.
"I don't know this circuit and what I know comes from a few snatches of conversations with other drivers and with the team," the Portuguese racer said, "Two years ago, the asphalt was deteriorating. I also know that it is perched at an elevation of 2000 metres which, in theory, should benefit the turbo engines. In practices, I don't think that SEAT will get a decisive advantage from it."
Monteiro added that the additional testing later today would aid the team in preparing the Leon TDi for the weekends racing as he seeks to secure his first points of the campaign.
"I hope that the car will be as effective at Puebla as it was at Curitiba, he said, and I hope not to be the victim of the excessive optimism of another driver! For the rest, my ambitions are big. There are ten of us drivers turning in the same second and the slightest error is severely punished and could deny you points. But I am confident I will go home with a good result under my belt. At least we are going to do everything to achieve that."
