Defending champion scores only BMW point on tough weekend in Mexico.

Defending World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx insisted that the single point he scored in Mexico could be his 'best point ever' after a tough weekend at Puebla for the BMW drivers.

Priaulx was the only one of the BMW factory drivers to trouble the scorers on a weekend dominated by rivals SEAT – with the Spanish marque winning both races and locking out the top six places in race two.

The BMW Team UK driver had qualified in twelfth place for the opening race of the weekend and was only able to manage tenth in race one, meaning he was unable to benefit from the reverse grid for the final race.

Despite that, he managed to break into the points in eighth place and he admitted that it had been a far from easy weekend of racing.

“I'm glad I tried out ice racing a couple of weeks ago as the track was as slippery as ever today,” he said. “Off the racing line you were simply left without a chance. The point I scored in race two was definitely the best ever, if you take the SEAT dominance into consideration.

“That was a tough one, but in many ways I am as happy with what I did here as I have been when I have won races, as I know I could not have fought harder than I did, especially in race two. This was a ‘yellow wash' for us with SEAT claiming so many points. I can't even say I could have done better with a higher qualifying position, as they were very strong all weekend, right up to the final laps of the race.”

Priaulx added that his point scored over the weekend was dedicated to the memory of former BTCC race winner – and Eurosport commentator – David Leslie, who was remembered with a minutes silence on the grid before the first race.

“It was a very emotional start to our race, but I know all of us wanted to put on a show David would have loved commentating on,” he said. “I would have been proud to dedicate a win to him, but as this one point was so hard earned, I shall dedicate it to his memory.”
