Augusto Farfus left it late to secure his maiden World Touring Car Championship pole position as a BMW driver ahead of the fourth round of the year at Pau.

Farfus, who won at the challenging street circuit last season despite dramatically rolling his BMW 320si during qualifying, posted a best time of 1min 21.960secs which was good enough to see him come out of the session ahead of a train of no fewer than four diesel-powered SEAT Leons.

“This was a tough qualifying,” he said. “This result comes at exactly the right time. After the difficult start to the season we just had to begin catching up at some point, and I hope this point has now come. Surely we have made the first step in this direction.

“However, I haven't won anything so far. The races in Pau are long and usually very eventful. But for the moment, I'm just very happy.”

Farfus left it late during the session as he posted a time just 0.020secs quicker than Augusto Farfus in the dying seconds of qualifying – and just a lap after he brushed the wall at turn five.

“Luckily the car was okay, so I could continue,” he said. “I kept on pushing as hard as I could to make it to the top – and that's what I managed to do.”
