Multiple World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx has been awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

The BMW Team UK driver won the final FIA ETCC title before securing a hat-trick of WTCC titles – meaning he is the only person to have won the crown since it was resurrected as a full championship series.

Priaulx currently leads the BMW challenge on the series this season in fourth place in the standings, having taken his first win of the year last time out at Pau.

"It is quite a surprise to receive an envelope with the official crest on," he said. "I was really taken aback and very honoured to read they wanted to bestow the MBE on me. I love my racing and am proud to carry the flags of both Guernsey and the UK on my car and overalls, so recognition of this sort is something really special.

"This honour is something I shall share with my family, whose support has made it possible for me to concentrate a hundred per cent on my chosen sport. I also want to take this opportunity to say thank you to all those people who supported and believed in me from the first time I drove a car in anger.

"They are too many to mention and I would hate to leave a single person out, but I am sure they know who they are."

Priaulx will chase a second win of the year this weekend in Brno.
