On the eve of his home round of the World Touring Car Championship at
Brands Hatch, Andy Priaulx has been named as the latest driver to sign up for the 2008 Race of Champions at Wembley Stadium.
The three-time WTCC title winner will once again join forces with
F1 racer
Jenson Button, although the pair will race as one of two GB entries this year rather than under the banner of Team England.
Priaulx himself reached the semi-finals of the Race of Champions last year before losing out to
Michael Schumacher and the Guernseyman said he would be returning to the London venue this time around keen to try and shine in front of his home fans.
“Michael is a tough competitor and we have a lot of respect for each other but when the lights go out there will be no holding us back,” Priaulx said. “It's fun, yes, but of course I want to win.
“It was frustrating to get so close but not to make either final last year. Competing at Wembley was incredible. They say the support of a home crowd gives you an extra second a lap, you can really feel them egging you on, the noise is phenomenal.”
Fredrik Johnsson, president of event organisers IMP added that he was pleased to see Priaulx confirm his participation.
“The Race of Champions brings together the world's top drivers and Andy is undoubtedly one of the toughest,” he said “The level of competition in the World Touring Car Championship is so intense, it is an amazing feat for him to have scored a hat-trick of world titles. We are thrilled that Andy will be racing at Wembley with us again this year.”
