World Touring Car Championship to bring in bio-fuels for 2009.

The World Touring Car Championship has announced that it will introduce second generation biofuel into the series for 2009.

The series already has cars running on diesel thanks to the entry from the works SEAT team, while the bio-ethanol fuelled Volvo C30 will join the grid for the first time this weekend at Brands Hatch.

Now, the series will implement the introduction of second generation biofuels from next year in an effort to improve its environmental standing.

“So many products can be used as a source for both first and second-generation biofuel,” FIA Touring Car Commission president Jonathan Ashman said. “Whereas first generation uses products that are primarily seen as kitchen consumables, 2G biofuel simply doesn't compete with it. Any produce used is what we consider to be waste, or non-food crops.

“From what I've seen so far, the aspects that fans love about touring car racing, the noise, the excitement and close racing, won't be affected. This is a purely an environmental change.”
