they need the top riders because these are the fastest guys and they always push to find the limit of the tire, guys like Edwards are fast but not as fast as the likes of vr,jl,mm, etc... and therefore cant take the tire to that next level ie the level of MM or JL and Rossi etc... In order to find out IF the tire will last tell the very end you need to push it to the limit for all 23 laps... just look what happened to Mark and Cal on the extra hard that put them both down this last race... for sure Mitchlin has their work cut out for them especially considering that not all bikes deliver the power to the rear the same, right now MM is saying the honda engine is to aggressive and last year it was Ducati that was
