MotoGP » Pol Espargaro inspired by past Marquez battles

@Yearby23 Barros only won in 2002 on the RC211V because he only had it for the last 4 races of that season and won 2 of the races.... I remember all that very well. But it was also mentioned at the time that Cobas had developed his own slipper clutch for that bike. Alex Barros has always been an impressive rider for me. And he debuted for my favourite team in 500cc racing, so I followed his career with interest until the end in wsbk. Still got some original West-Honda-Pons bodywork from an NSR he crashed in warmup at Assen.

The West Pons Honda('s) were fast in 2002 and 2003 because they worked with their own better than HRC's slipper clutch and had the late brilliant Antonio Cobas as technical director and Barros had Ramon Forcada as crew chief. (Now crewchief for Lorenzo at Yamaha). Barros and Capirossi were also very good experienced riders. 2002 was the only year Barros won on the RCV. Sete Gibernau's inherited Kato's full factory bike after Dajiro died at the 1st race of the year in 2003. I believe only Melandri can be considered to have had a real winning sat bike after 2002. And customer twostrokes hardly ever won anything. I have watched races for several decades but maybe once a year. Alex Barros in 2001 and some people in 2000, but before that not many.
