MotoGP » Casey Stoner: I’ll be at Valencia

Hi Codger. But isn't Gardner considered one of the best? And you forgot Schwantz! He only won the title once but was so popular that his number was retired. And correct me if I'm wrong, is he not Rossi's favorite rider? That period in the 90's is considered by most to be the most competitive ever. Gardner, Lawson, Doohan, Schwantz, Rainy, Chandler. The SIX Aliens of their time and all them were known for going balls out! Wouldn't that have something to do with a particular rider not getting more titles? Here's the thing, Rossi fans go on and on about him being the best ever based on number of titles. But he doesn't have the most, that would be Agostini. Are we saying then that title count isn't the only metric when debating who's best. Apparently yes, which means there are other factors. Bottom line. Rossi, Stoner, Schwantz, Lorenzo, whoever you think is the best, are all pretty damn good and you could make a reasonable argument for any of them.

I can't believe people think pushing a bike to it's limits is not what it's all about. That is totally what it's all about. Who would you rather watch race Gilles Villeneuve or Alain Prost? I know what most people's answer would be and it's not the professor. There is no denying that Rossi has done more for motogp than any other rider, in that regard he has no peers, but I don't think number titles is what makes you the greatest ever. I've never seen a poll or article written saying Schumacher is the best F1 driver ever, that would be Senna. As it stands now, most of the current riders all say Stoner is the best they've seen. I'll take their for it.

I don't know Dacron. I was just looking at race wins for the last 10 years. In the early and mid 2000's it was the Rossi show. I don't have the percentages, but he must won 80 percent of the races in a year. 2006 was wide open and oddly considered by many one of the worst years ever. And since then, no single rider has really dominated the win tally, it's been the 4 bigs. Take a look.

MotoGP » Rossi: Seventh was best I could expect

Win or crash may have been Stoner's M.O. but I think it is also something of an insult to him and his talent. There always is some disclaimer with regard his success. If Stoner was pushing the bike to it's limits while other riders were not or could not, that doesn't mean he has less talent. It means he has more talent! And since when is that characteristic a bad thing? I wish every rider in motogp rode as hard as Stoner. It's hard to say if the Ducati got worse. If you look at those who rode it, other than Stoner, it never seemed to be good or get better, just always the same. I was a shocked as anyone that Rossi failed on the Ducati. I think Ducati's problems are all basic. Geometry, weight distribution, motor. I think they need a clean sheet of paper, again! Codger seems like a decent guy and one of the more thoughtful people on here. And other thing, there are some people on here that know a thing or two about bike racing and some are in fact racers or mechanics themselves.

A man with Rossi's power will no doubt use it. I'm sure there have been a lot things he has done that belie his public image. The walls. The rumor that he blocked Stoner from joining Yamaha. Did that really happen? All the things Rossi said about Stoner not pushing hard enough and that anyone could win on the Ducati. Rossi's public admonition that he and Ducati stay together, all the while he's planning his exit. I'm sure there are a lot of insiders that do not like Rossi at all. A lot of these guys, successful racers, like other famous athletes and stars, are not cool people and have the PR and image consultants to prove it.
